Mindfulness Basics: Getting Started with Present-Moment Awareness
Educational Content
Mindfulness is the practice of paying attention to the present moment with openness, curiosity, and without judgment. Research has shown that regular mindfulness practice can reduce stress, anxiety, and depression while improving focus, emotional regulation, and overall wellbeing. Getting started with mindfulness does not require special equipment or extensive time. Simple practices include mindful breathing (focusing on your breath for a few minutes), body scans (slowly noticing sensations throughout your body), and mindful observation (fully engaging your senses with your surroundings). Start with just 5 minutes a day and gradually increase. Many people find guided meditations helpful when beginning. Remember that mindfulness is not about emptying your mind — it is about noticing your thoughts without getting caught up in them.
