Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based therapy developed by Dr. Francine Shapiro for processing traumatic memories. During EMDR sessions, you recall distressing experiences while the therapist guides your eye movements (or uses other forms of bilateral stimulation like tapping). This process is believed to help your brain reprocess traumatic memories so they become less distressing. EMDR follows an eight-phase protocol and typically requires fewer sessions than traditional talk therapy for trauma treatment. Research has shown EMDR to be effective for PTSD, anxiety, depression related to trauma, and phobias. The World Health Organization and the American Psychological Association both recommend EMDR as a treatment for PTSD.
